Boleros, Fandangos and Ciacconas from the Old and New Worlds
Christina Pluhar directs her outstanding international group of
virtuoso musicians in colourful sequences of early 17th-century
vocal and instrumental music. The exuberant dances and ostinato
basses of traditional music with their strong rhythms and freedom
for improvisation exerted a great fascination for composers at
the courts of 17th-century Spain and Italy. In this vivid context
chaconne-based works by Marcello Vitali, Antonio Bertali, Maurizio
Cazzati and Santiago de Murcia are performed alongside vocal
improvisations on popular tunes and rousing instrumental dances
the popular fandango, the jota, the romanesca and not least
the famous follia all enlivened in L’Arpeggiata’s inspirational
performances.
‘Improvisation is the key … and we had improvisation made
in heaven.’ The Times
There will be no interval during this concert.
