La Senna festeggiante |
La Senna festeggiante is the most substantial of Vivaldi’s three serenatas,
occasional works which in scale and structure lie somewhere between the
solo cantata and opera. Composed in Venice in the 1720s to a libretto by
Domenico Lalli, the simple plot involves three allegorical characters in a
celebration of the Seine and in praise of Louis XV with rich orchestral
invention and powerful vocal lines, in turn dramatic and enchanting.
Ivor Bolton, established as one of Britain’s most internationally active
and versatile conductors and the Festival’s founding music director,
maintains a regular and fruitful association with the brilliant Freiburg
Baroque, joined for this performance by a line-up of top international
interpreters of 18th-century vocal music.
‘ … their playing is infused with a vitality that never flags, never
ceases questing and daring.’ The Times
‘… it was clear the audience would never get enough of these
musicians.’ Seattle Times
