Ino cantata for soprano |
Outstanding soloists Danielle de Niese, widely acclaimed for her
dazzling performances at Glyndebourne Opera last summer, and
Paul Agnew, a leading interpreter of Baroque operatic roles, join
Opera Fuoco in a thrilling juxtapostion of Handel and Telemann.
This newly formed Paris-based orchestra is dedicated to the
innovative interpretation of operatic works and makes its first UK
appearance here.
Handel’s setting of Semele, adapted from Congreve and given at
Covent Garden (“after the manner of an Oratorio”) in 1744, evokes
the powerful emotions of the myth with spontaneity and charm in
a succession of seductive arias (notably the well-known ‘Where’er
you walk’). Telemann’s treatment of the Semele myth in his dramatic
cantata Ino, with typically expressive characterisation, is yet another
example of this composer’s ever-fertile invention even in his eighties
when he wrote this in 1765.
‘… an impression of great coherence, a true sense of dramatic
progression.’ Classica
‘… a theatrical approach with great attention to lyrical quality
from the orchestra playing.’ NRC Handelsblad Amsterdam
